The Leyes Intolerables, also known as the Coercive Acts, were a series of laws passed by Great Britain in 1774 in response to the Boston Tea Party. These acts were designed to punish the people of Massachusetts and reassert British authority in the colonies.
The four laws included in the Coercive Acts were:
The Boston Port Act, which closed the port of Boston until the colonists paid for the destroyed tea and showed obedience to British authority.
The Massachusetts Government Act, which revoked the colony's charter and increased the authority of the royal governor.
The Administration of Justice Act, which allowed royal officials accused of crimes to be tried in England instead of the colonies.
The Quartering Act, which required colonists to provide housing and supplies to British troops.
These laws were seen as a violation of colonists' rights and led to increased tension between Britain and the colonies. They were a contributing factor to the start of the American Revolution.
